Lake Michigan Beach

Another view of the beach at the campground in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan near the straits. This was the first stop on a trip to circumnavigate Lake Michigan. The day was cloudy so the colors were muted and the light was remarkable. I wanted to convey a feeling of the peacefulness of early morning in this painting.

Early Light

I wandered out from our campsite and noticed this view of the beach stretching out along the dunes. The early morning light was soft and two loons were calling across the water.

Overlooking Leelanau Bay

This view of Lake Michigan is one of my favorites. I have been transfixed by the lake and the distant dunes many times and this view is one that is fixed in my memory.

Reflecting Pond

The reflections in this pond at the Chicago Botanical Gardens are beautiful no matter what time of year one sees them. This painting was made from a photograph taken at the height of summer.

Michigan Dunes

There are many places along the Western shore of Michigan where you can see the dunes rising in the distance and enjoy their beauty. And in the Springtime, the hillsides are covered with wildflowers. There are many bright clear days when both the water and sky seem to be endless.

Lake Gogebic

This beautiful lake is located in the Upper Penninsula, MI, on the border between Michigan and Wisconsin. Art over 1300 acres, it is the largest lake in the UP. I attempted to capture the grandeur and immenseness of the lake along with the grey blue tones of a cloudy sky.

Across the Lake

Growing up as a child, I visited my father’s birthplace yearly and spent a few weeks at the cottage that his father had built in Western Minnesota. Although the inspiration for this painting came from my visits to a small lake in Northern Lower Michigan, it was always a destination that we spoke of…”across the lake”.  When you were out in the boat on the lake, you could just barely see the docks, trees and cottages on the other side. This painting is done in oil paints and reflects the cool northern light and the muted colors and hues on the distant shore.

The Lake

This painting evokes the feeling I get as I gaze out at the lake past the sand and the dunes to the water. The grasses are blowing and I hear the sound of the wind and the waves as I stand by the water’s edge. I painted this lakeview in the studio from a photograph taken while traveling. It is painted with oil paints using brushes and a palette knife.

Above Taos

While traveling in New Mexico, I am always struck by the vastness of the landscape and the quiet grandeur of the mountains. Although dry and brown for much of the year, there are times when the landscape is alive with the greens of the Pinion trees and the muted yellows of the Chimisa bushes. There is a quality which fills me with great awe when I hike the trails in that part of the Southwest. The light really is magical.

Cottonwoods

When I saw the glorious color in my photographs taken near Santa Fe, NM last October, I couldn’t resist. The light was amazing, the mountains beyond were an ethereal blue hue and the oranges and yellows of the cottonwood trees stood out in the slightly cloudy light. The entire valley was ablaze with orange and yellow and I knew I wanted to create a painting that reflected that remarkable day.
